Eleven

Concerning my children, ten is a hard birthday for me. They begin the double digits, and there's no turning back from that. It's like the end of an era almost. Anyway, ten makes me sad.

Eleven makes it real.

Eleven means she's not little anymore. She's becoming a young lady.

Eleven means the teen years are just around the corner.

Eleven means boys are just around the corner.

For ten years now I have had the amazing honor of watching her grow, and learn, and become. She who was once so shy she would cling to me, reach for me, hide behind me when someone spoke to her, has become an amazing, confident, smart, beautiful young lady.

There is a sadness to this year's celebration. Someone so dear, so important, so needed, is gone. She cried for her daddy the other day. I just held her on my lap and rubbed her back. I cry for them both now, knowing the love they share, the fun they had, the hole his absence has left in her heart.

But we know he would expect us to go on. And so today we celebrate Grace. We celebrate who she is, how fantastic she is, the gift she is.

With cake.
